Genetic Counseling

Genetic counselors work collaboratively with physician geneticists to provide a thorough evaluation of children and families referred to our clinics. While physicians are more involved in the process of physical examination, genetic counselors determine relevant family history and provide clarification about recurrence risks, the disease process, and address other parental concerns. They work in conjunction with the physician to arrange for and interpret genetic testing.

When a diagnosis is already established, and the family is primarily concerned about recurrence risks, genetic counselors are primarily responsible for the referral. Genetic counseling enables families to discuss their concerns in a forum that is informative, non-judgmental and objective. Counselors provide accurate information about the family’s genetic risks and reproductive planning options.
